Apple Stamp Phonics for Short Vowel Sound Aa

Apple Core Stamps - project for short-vowel sound Aaɑ

Apples!  It is almost apple season around here – I got a great deal on Gala apples last week.  Our girls love apples.  G likes her’s without the peel.  W likes her’s with – and will eat G’s discarded peels.  Last week we were having snack time after working through the very first lesson in The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading.  And I suddenly had a great idea for a craft to reinforce the concepts taught in that phonics lesson – the short vowel sound for Aaɑ.

It seems like there is no shortage of apple activities out there.  And I hesitate to share this one with you, but we did it and enjoyed it, so I am sharing!  This simple activity built upon a number of facts the girls already know, and added a little bit more to their understanding of apples.  Here’s what we did.  (more…)

A Box-o-Lantern for Preschoolers and Toddlers

A Toddler/Preschool Halloween craft, a box-o-lantern

Are you not quite ready to carve a pumpkin with your little ones?  I know we aren’t!  There’s something about toddlers and sharp objects that should not mix.  In fact, I don’t really like to carve pumpkins at all.  We will get to cutting open a pumpkin later in the season to explore the insides and get all gooey.  But to start off our fall fun this year, we created a fun no-carve alternative to a pumpkin that will last all season.

This project was borne of a painting session we were doing that I wanted to extend until we could get the girls in the bath before nap time.  We were working on painting our salt dough hand prints from our first day of preschool and I had out the yellow and orange paints.  The girls painted their salt dough hand prints WAY faster than I was expecting, so I quickly looked around the house for something to extend our painting fun. Simple Sticky Candy Cane Craft

Simple sticky candy cane craft for toddlers and preschoolers

Last year we started a new tradition for reading a Christmas book a day as a countdown to Christmas.  At the end of the season, I tried to store away all the Christmas books; but there were some that the girls liked so much, they found their way into the everyday reading routine throughout the year.  One of those books is J is for Jesus by Crystal Bowman.  It is a sweet little book that tells the story of the candy cane and the birth of Jesus.  It was my hope to make crafts or activities to go along with each of the books we read this year in our Advent books.  So, I came up with a simple sticky candy cane craft for our girls (ages 2 and 3) to do. Simple Toddler Birthday Shirt

Toddler Birthday Shirt Project reveal

Our youngest daughter just celebrated her second birthday a couple of weeks ago!  I can’t believe how she has grown from such a tiny thing to an active toddler!  And what a blessing she is to our family; she is so sweet!

As we were getting ready to celebrate her birthday, I was in the midst of one of the busiest seasons of my year.  I was teaching Bible study, making costumes for our annual visit to Mickey’s Halloween Party, working on a major contributor post for another blog, and keeping this family close to on-track.  And we found out that another one of our friends was having a birthday party for her son on W’s actual birthday.  Instead of thinking of that as a headache, I thought it was a blessing, because I just didn’t have the time to plan a full-blown party. Creative Galaxy Inspired Toddler Mosaic Art

As I have said before on this blog, I am not naturally artistic, but our oldest daughter definitely is!  And her early and enthusiastic interest in art has forced me to come up with opportunities to explore her artistic side; but often I feel like I am floundering for inspiration.  And I often get ideas from just watching what she is watching, what she is interested in.  One of the shows she is very interested in is a new show from Amazon Prime Instant Video called Creative Galaxy.  It is perfect for her art-loving soul! 12 Must-Do Crafts to Make before Your Tot is 3

Father's Day Craft_Tacky Tie 3

I do not consider myself very crafty.  I am definitely not artistic and have never taken an art class.  But our first daughter is very artistic, possessing a natural bend toward creating and expressing herself through art.  We noticed it really early.

That meant I had to come up with ways for her to be able to express herself.  Since I am not naturally talented in that area, the crafts I came up with for her to do are very simple.  But it is their simplicity that make them something any parent can replicate with her kids.
